Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba

With season 2 of One Punch Man and JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind concluding in a few episodes, what is there to watch next?
If you haven’t already started, it is time to watch Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba!!!

SPOILERS!

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba is set in old Japan. It is the tale of a young man, Tanjirou Kamado, that sets out to work in order to provide for his family. When he returns he finds his family slaughtered by a demon. The only surviving member is his sister, Nezuko, although she isn’t quite human anymore, she’s now a demon. In the quest to turn his sister back into a human and avenge his family Tanjirou aims to become a demon slayer.

The first episode starts very dramatically with Tanjirou carrying a blood covered Nezuko through the snow. Immediately you want to know more and this episode certainly delivers. The episode is like a rollercoaster, with sharp contrasts between scenes. The amount of love and care shown amongst the Kamado family is extremely heart-warming, and even at the end Tanjiro and Nezuko walk holding hands, after their desperate fight for survival.

I love this series for many reasons. The character design is beautiful and refreshingly different. The animation is great in both conveying emotion and epic fight sequences. The story is exciting and each episode is well paced allowing the characters to develop naturally. I haven’t read the manga, but I am guessing each anime episode covers one chapter, or at most one and a half. This is important as so many anime try to rush the story, meaning that somethings are left out that could be of importance in the future. Finally, I just love the quirky preview section at the very end of each episode! Many anime have a preview after the end credits, but modern ones seem to lack the quirky ‘old school’ approach where the animation is very limited and characters make fun of themselves.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba is 24 episodes long, 9 episodes are currently available in Japanese. There is no UK age rating for the anime yet, but the manga is rated T for Teen.

This series should last until the Autumn anime schedule arrives in case this Summer’s anime list doesn’t tickle your fancy!
A Summer Anime list will be on its way soon!
