Lexemons anime and manga blog - Fire Force

Published: 2019.11.08

Fire Force (Enn Enn no Shouboutai)

I have briefly written about Fire Force before in a previous blog (http://turnipstarfish.co.uk/mangablog2019/summer-anime-2019/), however I am now 15 episodes into it and feel that it needs its own, more in-depth blog.
Fire Force, written and created by Atsushi Ōkubo (also the creator of Soul Eater), has been running since 2015 and is an ongoing manga and anime series.

Fire Force is about special fire fighters that are tackling a phenomenon called spontaneous human combustion. The combustion turns humans into fire demons, known as Infernals. Then it’s up to the Special Fire Force, who can manipulate flames, to put out the fire before the demon flames spread to other humans and objects.

Fire Force follows the journey of Shinra Kusakabe, a teenager with a dark history, and his time with Special Fire Force Company 8. Shinra is introduced to us in the first episode waiting for a train which happens to contain an Infernal. He is notably different from average anime characters because of his crimson eyes, spikey teeth and ‘creepy’ smile.

The Special Fire Force Company 8 are all introduced in this episode, each character showing their special fire abilities. Most impressive of all is Shinra’s ability, devil foot, which lets him control flames that come out of his feet enabling him to blast though air, hit with extraordinary force and move incredibly fast.

As the first episode progresses more is revealed about Shinra’s past and why he desperately wants to join the Special Fire Force. Without giving away too many spoilers: Shinra’s childhood home, mother and brother were destroyed by a strange Infernal, however few believe that an Infernal caused the fire, blaming Shinra instead. Shinra’s desire is to find out the truth about what really happened 12 years ago at his home.

The first episode of Fire Force is action packed but also full of mystery. It leaves you wondering about Shinra’s past, what the Infernals actually are and how they are created. As the series progresses the action continues with some really awesome kickass fights. The mystery of the Infernals deepens with some really surprising twists and turns.

When I first watched Fire Force I didn’t immediately engage with it. I enjoyed it, but it didn’t leave me wanting more. However, once I got to episode 4 and with the introduction of new characters and as the plots had been developed, I was hooked. The plot twists in Fire Force are very clever and I can’t wait to see how the anime progresses further.

The Fire Force manga is rated 13+, the anime’s rating is unknown, but will more than likely be 15.
